We were challenged to create a typeface that commemorates 100 years since the founding of the Bauhaus campus in Dessau, Germany.

We crafted Neubau, a typeface reimagining of Herbert Bayer’s Bauhaus type experiment, ‘Universal’. Bayer’s work resulted in a set of lowercase glyphs, which sadly never became commercially available due to established typographic norms in 1920s Germany… I decided to change that.

Now with four weights, capital and mathematical glyphs, Neubau brings Bayer’s work back to life for the 21st-century graphic designer and typographer. It has been designed and programmed in Glyphs 3 and is a fully downloadable open typeface.

The typeface pushed certain glyphs beyond Bayer’s work, creating new, more justifiable forms for ‘S’, as well as all uppercase and numerical glyphs.

Neubau is also the brand typeface of untitled one!
